I just finished reading the brand-new eBook, Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise and I wanted to share with you my review. Written by author and photographer Tom Bricker, Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise is a photographic journey into 24 consecutive hours at Disneyland during the historic 2012 Leap-Year “One More Disney Day” event. All of the 200-plus photos featured in the book were taken during that single operational day at Disneyland. Keep reading to see how you can get 25% off Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise.

The photographs almost tell their own story as the 24 hours of the “One More Disney Day” event unfolds before your eyes.

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise Review

The Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise eBook is a must-have for even the smallest Disney fan’s collection. The photographs almost tell their own story as the 24 hours of the “One More Disney Day” event unfolds before your eyes. Tom, who personally took every photo in Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise, hand-selected these photographs so that the reader can either relive their own “One More Disney Day” memories or see what he or she missed by not attending Disneyland on this historical day. Tom innately describes each photograph so the reader has a better understanding of the picture’s details and he even throws in little-known bits of trivia that even the most-seasoned Disneyland traveler may not know about.

I read the Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise first from my PC using Adobe Reader and I was amazed with the pictures; I then open it up on my iPad and the pictures were even more vibrant and visually appealing! Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise is the first eBook created by Tom Bricker but he promises there will be other eBooks to come.

If you’re a fan of the Disney theme parks, I personally think you’ll enjoy Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise which is a fresh and beautiful look at one day in Disneyland.

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise eBook Features include:

75 pages of great photos and information

200+ photos from one full operational day in Disneyland

Facts and historical tidbits about Disneyland

The portability of being able to take this vibrant eBook anywhere and view it on your phone, iPad, or other eBook reader

Beginning today (January 25, 2012), Disney fans can now register for, or upgrade their existing Disney Visa Card, to Disney’s Premier Visa Card. I announced the forthcoming Disney’s Premier Visa Card in July 2011. The new Disney Premier Visa card, which has a $49 annual fee, includes all of the benefits of the original Disney Rewards Visa card plus:

Now earn 2% in Disney Dream Reward Dollars on gas, grocery, dining, and Disney purchases. Earn 1% in Disney Dream Reward Dollars on all other purchases.

Redeem for airline travel on any airline to any destination. Just buy airline tickets with your new Disney Premier Visa Card and then pay yourself back by redeeming your Disney Dream Reward Dollars for a credit on your monthly statement. No block-out dates for redeeming.

Special new card designs. Sorcerer Mickey, Princess, Enchanted Castle, Cars, and more!

There are currently two promotional offers for the new card:

Sorcerer Mickey Design on Disney's Premier Visa Card

Upgrade your existing Disney Visa Card to Disney’s Premier Visa Card and earn 5% Disney Dream Reward Dollars on card purchases at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and most Disney locations for the first 3 months. This can be done by logging into your existing Disney Visa Card account and selecting the upgrade offer in the upper right corner or by calling Chase and requesting an upgrade.

Apply for a new account with Disney’s Premier Visa Card and get a $100 statment credit after your first use.

It has not been confirmed if this is a Visa Signature card which come with additional perks including purchase protection, automatic manufacturer warranty extension, shopping discounts, and travel insurance. The only way that I would apply or upgrade to this card is if the $49 fee includes the Visa Signature benefits.

UPDATE: Although not specifically identified as a Visa Signature card, the Disney’s Premier Visa Card press release indicates that the card includes Visa Zero Liability purchase protection coverage and Visa travel protection benefits, including emergency card replacement, travel accident insurance and baggage delay coverage. These are somewhat standard benefits for most cards and are not the Visa Signature benefits I was alluding to above. At this time I still say that this card is not worth the annual fee for the minimal additional benefits above the standard Disney Visa Card.

Everybody always asks me, “How can I do a cheap Disney family vacation?” My answer is, “You CAN’T do a cheap Disney vacation!” This is the part where most people get disappointed and decide against doing a Disney vacation. Don’t worry though; you can do your Disney vacation less expensively and on any budget! Here are my 5 Best Ways to Save Money on your Disney Vacation.

Disney anything…whether it’s their theme parks, cruises, branded clothing, or media is inherently expensive and it is expensive because Disney can get away with it. It’s the simple economics concept of supply and demand; as long as the turnstiles at the Disney theme parks are turning, staterooms on the Disney cruise ships are full, and people are buying anything Disney…prices will remain high. In fact, Disney recently implemented their second price increase of 2011 at Disneyland and Walt Disney World…only a few months after increasing prices earlier this year!

Here are my 5 Best Ways to Save Money on your Disney Vacation:

We actually have two Disney Visa accounts; one in Tracy’s name and one in mine. We use Tracy’s card whenever we make a Disney purchase or are on a Disney vacation. Even though we only receive one-tenth of Disney Dream Reward Dollars for what we spend, at least were getting something back towards our next Disney vacation. I use my card as my business expense account for work. Just since the first of this year we’ve earned enough Disney Dream Reward Dollars to pay for most of our Disney World Annual Passports and a night in a savannah-view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

If you don’t already have the Disney Visa card and would like to take advantage of these great benefits, please complete the application and use my cardmember ID of 18073428 to get a $25 Disney gift card after your first card use (purchases, balance transfers, any checks that are used to access your account, and excludes cash advances).

2. Be Selective When Eating at Disney to Save Money on Your Disney Vacation

As I stated above in the introduction, Disney is expensive and this also applies to eating while on Disney property. Don’t get me wrong; there are some fabulous restaurants and places to eat while on your Disney vacation. Unfortunately, you’re going to pay an arm and a leg whether it is from the concession cart or the best Disney resort restaurant. Read some of my previous reviews from Epcot’s Electric Umbrella quick service restaurant or the 50′s Prime Time Cafein Disney’s Hollywood Studios park, a low-end table-service restaurant. These reviews will give you an idea of what you’re getting (or lack therof) for your money.

At $8.99 the Disney turkey leg is my “Best Value” food item and a favorite!

Here’s a great example of how we saved over $100 the other night for dinner while spending the night at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL). Tracy wanted to have a reasonably good meal and Karlee suggested that we try Boma, the dining buffet inside AKL. While sitting poolside at the AKL, I telephoned Disney Dining and made a reservation for 5:40 PM that night. As we headed back up to our room we had to pass by Boma and Tracy saw the price of the buffet; $35.99 for ages 10+ and $17.99 for ages 4 – 9. Tracy, who majored in accounting, nearly had a corony right there!!! I knew that’s what the price of the dinner was but figured that it would be a great family event for us. Tracy said she would not enjoy the meal because she would be sick knowing what it cost. We instead opted for Sweet Tomatoes, a healthy and fun salad/soup/bread buffet restaurant that we often visited while living in Utah; but there is not one in Tallahassee. We still had a great family dinner and instead of paying $150 (including tip) at Boma, we walked away only paying $36 at Sweet Tomoatoes.

There will be times when you will have to eat on Disney property whether it is in a theme park or at a resort. Here are my tips for when you have to eat on Disney property:

Use snacks to supplement your meals. Taking some crackers or peanut mixes into the park will tide you over between meals and could even be a substitute for a meal. Keep other things like licorice, drinks, and other candies in your room to snack on.

Research and understand the general price of the restaurants that you might be visiting.

Create a dining budget. If you’re used to eating fast-food at home, stick to the quick service dining options. If your used to eating at $20 per plate restaurants try out some of the table service restaurants. If you eat at $75+ per plate restaurants, try some of Disney’s fine dining places.

Stick to a dining budget. It’s easy to break your budget by eating too many table service meals when you only budgeted for 2 or 3 over your 7 day family vacation. There are some great quick service dining options available that are significantly cheaper than table service. My favorite is the famous Disney turkey leg; for $8.99 it can easily satisfy two adults and two of them can feed a family of five.

3. Don’t Stay at a Disney Resort Hotel

You can have just as much fun and still have a satisfying family vacation staying off-resort as you can staying at a Disney resort. Besides, the room rates at Disney resorts are outrageous! Of the 12 visits we have made to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, only three have included stays at Disney resort hotels. Although staying at a Disney resort is magical in and of itself, there are only a few basic perks for staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel:

Early morning/late night hours–Throughout each week several of the Disney World theme parks will either open early or stay open late for resort guests. This can give you a few extra hours to play in a less crowded park.

Walt Disney Transportation System–The Walt Disney Transportation System is a fleet of buses that transport Disney resort guests between the Walt Disney World resorts, theme parks, and Downtown Disney.

Complimentary theme park parking–Resort guests can park at any of the theme parks for free with valid resort identification ($14 per day value).

If any of the above benefits is a make-or-break decision for your Disney vacation, by all means pay the extra $100 to $300 per night; otherwise, read on to learn that it won’t make a difference in the success of your Disney vacation.

Take a look at our recent reviews of non-Disney 3-star properties near Disney World at Baymont Inn & Suites Celebration and Radisson Resort Orlando-Celebration; both of these hotels were booked via Priceline’s Name Your Own Price option for less than $50 per night! Rooms at a Disney World Economy Resort (least expensive) equivalent to 2.5-star hotel would have cost nearly $100 more per night!

The Radisson Resort Orlando-Celebration for Less Than $50 Per Night!

We have successfully won bids through Priceline’s Name Your Own Price program nearly 50 times for hotels and resorts all across the United States including Anaheim, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, Las Vegas, NV, Kearney, NB, Paducah, KY, and Orlando, FL often saving 50% or more over publicly listed hotel pricing. For example, we are taking a Mexican Riviera Disney Cruise in October of this year out of Los Angeles and need to stay in a hotel the night before we board the Disney Wonder cruise ship. I found that the Crowne Plaza Los Angeles Harbor hotel, located only 1/2 mile from the cruise terminal with complimentary shuttle service to/from the cruise terminal, was a hotel that participates in the Priceline Name Your Own Price program. Using the tips that I outline below, I successfully won 2 rooms on Priceline for $65.00; the cheapest room on the hotel’s reservation website for this same night is $161.00–a 60% savings!

Utilize web resources to understand how Priceline Name Your Own Price works and then learn how to succesfully win the lowest possible bid for a hotel room. I recommend the Hotel FAQ located at biddingfortravel.com. Make sure that you completely understand the “free re-bidding” section of the FAQ.

Name your price when you book your next trip at Priceline.com®.

Utilize web resources to see what hotels have been reported for various locations and star levels and what other travelers are paying for hotel rooms in the area you will be staying. I recommend reviewing the Hotels forum at biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com to see successful/unsuccessful bids and a list of hotels that have been previously reported as participating in the Priceline Name Your Own Price program. Priceline has their own tool that shows real winning hotel bids. I caution you to follow pricing trends found at Bidding for Travel and Better Bidding over Priceline’s own tool as Priceline may show hotel room pricing that travelers have won but the price may not be the lowest available. After you have successfully followed the bidding strategies learned above a few times, you may be ready to try the advanced permutation bidding strategy discussed at biddingfortravel.com.

Contact the hotel directly for special requests. Although not guaranteed, the hotel can make notes in your reservation for your special requests. This may include a request for a room with two beds, a crib, or a roll-away bed. We have only experienced one Priceline Name Your Own Price reservation (Best Western Mountain View Inn in Provo, UT) who would not accommodate our request for two beds.

When checking in, always ask if they have any complimentary upgrades available. Typically, the hotel will have their lowest (in both price and quality) room reserved on your Priceline Name Your Own Price reservation. If the hotel can accommodate your request, they will typically do what they can for you. We have received complimentary upgraded rooms, complimentary use of a crib, and complimentary use of a microwave and/or fridge by simply asking.

Keep in mind that Priceline also offers Name Your Own Price bidding for rental cars and airline tickets also.

4. Do Not Buy Discounted Disney Theme Park Tickets.

I cannot stress this enough; Disney does not discount their theme park tickets so do not buy them from anybody whose claims to sell discounted Disney park tickets; this includes eBay and Craigslist. Only purchase Disney theme park admission tickets from authorized sellers; there are a ton of small stores and kiosks in Anaheim, CA and Orlando, FL that are not authorized sellers.

Be wary of:

Partially-Used Admission Tickets–Disney has designed their theme park tickets around the philosophy of the longer your stay at Disneyland or Walt Disney World the cheaper, per day, the tickets are. For example, currently an Adult (age 10+) one-day pass (not including the park hopper or non-expiration options) to a single Walt Disney World park costs $85. If you purchase the same type of Disney park ticket for a 10 day Disney vacation the per day cost is only $29.10; a savings of 66% over the single day option. Because it ends up being cheaper to buy the multiple day them park admission tickets, some travelers will purchase more days than they need and will then sell their admission media to a re-seller for pennies on the dollar who will then turn around and sell them to unsuspecting tourists like you. The problem with this is:

Disney admission tickets are non-transferable and must be used by the same person for any and all days that the ticket is used. Walt Disney World theme parks use biometric (fingerprint) technology to ensure the person using the ticket each day is the same person who redeemed the ticket on the first day of use. Currently, Disneyland does not use biometric technology.

Disney reserves the right to ask, and they do at times, information from a ticket holder regarding the ticket media that is presented for admission in order to verify the ticket holder is the same person who initially used the ticket media. Things Disney may ask a ticket holder are the date of the first ticket media’s use, subsequent dates the media was used for admission into a Disney theme park, and location of where the admission media was purchased. If Disney can determine that the admission ticket was transferred from the original purchaser they can, and they will, confiscate the ticket media. It’s just not worth the risk of not being granted entrance to any Disney theme park by saving some money; it is afterall the Happiest Place on Earth! Save money on your Disney vacation in other areas but do not try to save money by purchasing discounted tickets.

Free Disney Theme Park Admission–Free Disney or Universal theme park tickets sounds great, right? How does the saying go? “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” and in this case it is. As you drive around Orlando, FL or Anaheim, CA you are bound to see tens or even hundreds of stores/kiosks with marketing ploys trying to get you to stop by; giant inflated gorillas and giant balloons are only two of the many techniques. Although getting discounted or even free Disney theme park tickets may seem like a way to save money on your Disney vacation, if you fall for this marketing tactic you will walk away with a couple hundred dollars in Disney or Universal theme park tickets but will also walk away with a $20,000+ timeshare agreement. Some hotels even disguise their concierge desk agents as timeshare salespersons; see my review of the Baymont Inn & Suites-Celebration for an example of how a hotel may do this.

Counterfeit Disney Admission Tickets–Because Disney theme park tickets are in such high demand and tourists to the Orlando and Anaheim areas are trying to save a buck, the numbers of people selling counterfeit tickets are abundent. Again, buy your Disney theme park tickets from Disney directly or from a reputable source.

5. Take Advantage of Disney Promotions, But Only if it Saves You Money.

If Disney’s theme park or resort bookings for an upcoming period are lower than anticipated they will often release some sort of a promotion to entice travelers to take a Disney vacation. Some of these offers include; “Kids Eat Free”, Kids Fly Free”, Stay for 7 Days, Pay for 4 Days”, “Kids Sail Free”, etc. From the names, these offers sound very intriguing. However, further research of the offers will lead to the exceptions and limitations:

Offer valid at Moderate and Deluxe resorts or offer valid on category 3-6 staterooms only–These are the medium and high-priced resort or cruise accomodations. Basically, Disney is getting you to bump up the cost of your vacation to cover what they are losing in offering you the promotion.

Airfare must be booked with package–This means that the airfare will be booked at current airline rates which will be higher than if you were to watch airfares and book the airline tickets separately.

Sometimes there will not be exceptions or limitations. Before booking one of these Disney promotional offers compare the price of your accomodations (on Disney property or off) without the promotion (including food if it is a free dining offer) versus the price of the vacation with the promotion. Typically you can create your own itinerary for less even with Disney’s promotion. For example, about a month ago Disney came out with a Kids Sail Free promotion on some Mexican Riveria on Disney Cruise Line for certain sailings this fall. The restriction for this promotion, however, was that it was for stateroom categories 3 to 6 which are oceanside verandah and family suite rooms; the most expensive staterooms on the ship. A family may want to take advantage of this offer however when comparing the cost for two adults in a category 6 stateroom versus the cost of two adults and two children in a category 11 (inside deluxe) statroom the category 6 stateroom (with kids sail free) is substantially more expensive than just paying for the kids in the category 11 stateroom.

However you decide to save money on your Disney vacation, just remember to enjoy it and to have fun; that is what Disney and family vacations are all about and you can save money on your Disney Vacation.

Disney is introducing, or at least preparing to introduce, a new version of their Rewards Visa Card; Disney’s Premier Visa Card by Chase. This afternoon I had the opportunity to participate in an on-line survey about the new Disney’s Premier Visa Card which will have additional reward benefits compared to the original Disney Visa card but it will also come with an annual fee.

The new Disney’s Premier Visa card includes all of the benefits of the original Disney Rewards Visa card plus:

Now earn 2% in Disney Dream Reward Dollars on gas, grocery, dining, and Disney purchases. Earn 1% in Disney Dream Reward Dollars on all other purchases by using your Disney’s Premier Visa Card.

Redeem for airline travel on any airline to any destination. Just buy airline tickets with your new Disney’s Premier Visa Card and then pay yourself back by redeeming your Disney Dream Reward Dollars for a credit on your monthly statement. No block-out dates for redeeming.

Special new card designs. Sorcerer Mickey, Princess, Enchanted Castle, Cars, and more new designs on the Disney’s Premier Visa Card!

The Disney’s Premier Visa card will have an annual fee of $49.00.

My initial reaction to the new Disney’s Premier Visa card is lukewarm at best. The new Disney added benefits versus the annual fee, in and of itself, does not justify upgrading. However, the images of the card indicate that this is a Visa Signature card, however nothing in the survey mentions whether or not the Disney’s Premier Visa Card comes with the complimentary Visa Signature benefits which includes purchase protection, automatic manufacturer warranty extension, shopping discounts, and travel insurance just to name a few. The Visa Signature website states that if the card says Visa Signature, all benefits are included although certain restrictions, limitations, and exclusions may apply. If, and only if, the new Disney’s Premier Visa card includes the Visa Signature benefits is this a card that I would upgrade to and carry in my wallet.

I took the opportunity to capture some screen shots from the survey with the new Disney’s Premier Visa Card. Click an image below for a larger view:

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

I did a solo trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios tonight and just returned to my room at the Doubletree by Hilton Orlando at Seaworld and have the following takeaways from the trip:

I love the famous Doubletree chocolate chip cookie. Yeah it has nothing to do with my visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios tonight but I’m eating one while I type this post.

I went to The American Idol Experience final. It actually wasn’t too bad. Finalists from the day’s 5 previous shows battled it out for a “Front of the Line” pass to any of American Idol’s auditions this summer for next year’s season. A “Front of the Line” pass holder from 2009 actually made it into the final 5 in season 9 (2010). This is definitely a show to be seen while at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

I went on Star Tours using a fast pass I picked up prior to going into The American Idol Experience. This is the second time that I have ridden Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios since it’s reintroduction with new scenes and in 3D. The scenes that I saw tonight were the planet Hoth and the Death Star. I really like this new version of Star Tours; it’s a smooth ride and the 3D visuals add to the total effect of the experience.

The first time Tracy and I went on the Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios back in April we weren’t impressed. The 4th dimension experience (Disney California Adventures doesn’t have this element) adds nothing to the ride. The ride tonight, however, was really good; probably as good as any that I’ve been on at DCA. Tracy and I must have just had a bad selection by the computer that day back in April (every ride is randomized in the number of times it goes up and falls and how far).

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is by far my favorite Disney coaster and is one of the best of the Disney’s Hollywood Studios attractions. The music by Aerosmith along with the coaster inversions are perfectly complimentary to each other. Plus it takes your picture at take-off which allows me to do goofy poses as is shown below:

Yeah, that's me in the back left...

Fantasmic! is a great show. However, I am partial to the Disneyland version that is shown on the Rivers of America using the Sailing Ship Columbia and the Mark Twain Riverboat than to the one shown at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I don’t know; maybe since it’s the first version that I saw is why I’m partial to it.

All in all, it was a great evenining at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The decour of the cafe is state of the art accomodations; at least from the 1950′s. Large tube televisions are scattered throughout the restaurant playing different television shows from the era. There are counters, fridges, cupboards and other knick-knacks that adorn the different seating stations.

I had read online that Momma’s Pot Roast was to die for so that is what I ordered. I added a chocolate malt also as I had also heard they were very good. The dish arrived warm and it smelled just like Sunday dinner at my parents house when I was a kid! The pot roast topped a heaping scoop of mashed potatoes while julianed vegatables were topped on the meat. The malt was served in a metal cup and the serving size was more than enough and Carson shared a few sips with me. Momma’s Pot Roast is $17.99 and the chocolate malt ran $4.99.

Tracy ordered the 1/2 turket sandwich with side salad and she thought it was fabulous; the cost was $11.99. The kids each got a kids meal; Karlee had chicken nuggets (Karlee would be happy if all she ate was chicken nuggets for the rest of her life) while Carson chose the meatloaf. The kids meals came with a side and they both opted for chicken noodle soup. Additionally, the kids meal came with a dessert choice and they both had the ice cream sundae. The kids meals also included a beverage and actually appeared to be the bargain of the day in both quantity of food and price at just $8.59 each.

I opted to try the Smores dessert (no, I wasn’t following my recommended daily calorie intake this day) as it sounded delicious how it was described on the menu. The menu copywriter should win a prize because what arrived was nothing like the description. It was simply a full piece of graham cracker covered with chocolate syrup with six marshmellows (lightly toasted) on top. I do not recommend the smores along with it’s $4.79 price.

All of the staff were pleasant, often stopping and goo-gooing over Grace and her precious smile. Our total bill was $69.65 including tip. 50′s Prime Time Cafe is a great place for a nice, relaxing meal before heading back out into Hollywood Studios to ride Rockin’ Rollercoaster.
